Attention WalMart Shoppers: Put Down That Sandwich!

Well, I guess the last thing you’ll want to reach for these days is ham and eggs.  Or roast beef, at least if you shop at WalMart.

The USDA announced yesterday that approximately 380,000 pounds of ham and roast beef are being recalled due to possible listeria contamination.  This is a voluntary recall by Zemco Industries, who distributes lunch meats to WalMart stores nationwide.  WalMart immediately pulled the items in question from their shelves.  The meats in question are sold in WalMart’s Marketside Grab and Go sandwiches.

The products subject to recall include:

  • “Marketside Grab and Go Sandwiches BLACK FOREST HAM With Natural Juices Coated with Caramel Color” with the number 17800 1300.
  •  ”Marketside Grab and Go Sandwiches HOT HAM, HARD SALAMI, PEPPERONI, SANDWICH PEPPERS” with the number 17803 1300.
  • “Marketside Grab and Go Sandwiches VIRGINIA BRAND HAM With Natural Juices, MADE IN NEW YORK, FULLY COOKED BACON, SANDWICH PICKLES, SANDWICH PEPPERS” with the number 17804 1300.
  • “Marketside Grab and Go Sandwiches ANGUS ROAST BEEF Coated with Caramel Color” with the number 17805 1300

The packages, bearing vendor number 398412808 and the USDA mark of inspection, were produced between June 18 and July 2, with “use by” dates between Aug. 20 and Sept. 10.

The meats involved were only sold in these pre-packaged sandwiches, not individual packs of deli meats.  If you’ve bought one of these sandwiches, return it to the store for a refund.  If you’ve already eaten the sandwich, be on the lookout for symptoms of listeriosis: high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness, and nausea. The illness can be dangerous to anyone with a weakened immune system.

I can’t say much more than that.  I’ve been on my soapbox a lot, so I’ll let you draw your own conclusions.

  1. Thanks Karin for the info from your soapbox :D

Fortunately, we do not shop at WalMart; too hard to find “Made in the USA” products there + their produce footprint doesn’t fit our lifestyle.
We’d rather eat your organic items!

    Have a good Peculiar day!

  2. Lana, I agree. I’ve also seen no concerted effort there to carry oraganic items. Although it’s a long drive from our place and the prices can be a bit scary, I would much rather shop at Whole Foods. And even then, I look at each container verrrry carfully. Thankfully I don’t buy produce very often (If we don’t grow it, we don’t eat it!) and can always tell the distinct different when eating in the home of someone else. It’s all I can do to stay off my soapbox at that moment. Oh well.

I had a Particularly Pleasant Peculiar day, ma dear. Hope you’re doing well … I miss seeing you at market!

  3. eeewwwww.

Neil and I stopped shopping at Walmart in 2005? I think…
My dad always hated the place and said he felt like cattle in a feedlot when he was there. Just being herded around.

But that’s just gross. I hate freaky meat and pretty much all the meat they sell qualifies as that – even without the listeria!
