Happenings on the Ranch

Baby, it’s cold outside

We’re only four weeks into winter and the arctic blast is here.  Cold weather has a solid grip on the ranch.  These days make it difficult to work outside and I constantly worry about the animals and how they’re doing.  Mind you, they all have adequate shelters and protection but it doesn’t stop me from worrying, especially about the young ones.  I can’t help but think about what might happen if they’re caught out in the cold for some reason.  I’m constantly looking out the back windows to make sure I can see everyone moving around or tucked away in their houses.

One of the blogs I go to regularly is the NBC Action News Weather Blog.  I have to say, Gary Lezak and his weather team are the only weather I watch because they are always so accurate.  We knew this cold blast was coming two weeks ago and we were able to prepare thanks to Gary and his team.  To check out their blog, go to http://community.nbcactionnews.com/blogs/weatherblog/default.aspx.  We rely on these forecasts and the blog around here to let us know what to expect.

Other than the weather, it’s fairly quiet around here.  I’m busy putting together the crop plan for this year and determining what will be ready at what time of the season so I can plan the farmers’ markets, CSA and canning activities properly.  Winter may be the slow time of year on the farm but there’s always something to do!
